Jessica Simpson is turning the page on a new chapter after her split from estranged husband Eric Johnson.
“For Jessica, he is not what she needs,” a source exclusively tells Us Weekly of former NFL player Johnson, 45. “It’s just not working and hasn’t for a while.”
The insider adds that Johnson is a “great dad” to his and Simpson’s three children: Maxwell, 12, Ace, 11, and Birdie, 5. “She has the best kids and they are healthy and love is there,” the source says.
Although Simpson, 44, is “happy and healthy,” the insider adds that her relationship with Johnson had been on the rocks.
“She isn’t going to worry about [what he is doing] and is doing her thing too,” the source says. “She has her own mind, money, and family support for whatever happens.”
After months of speculation surrounding her relationship status with Johnson, Simpson revealed earlier this week that the pair called it quits after 10 years of marriage.
“Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” Simpson said in a statement to Us on Monday, January 13. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”
Simpson sparked split rumors in November 2024 when she teased her new music and called her comeback “personal,” writing via Instagram that “it’s an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve 🎶 🎼 🤍🖤.”
After Jessica’s sister, Ashlee Simpson, went on to slam split speculation when asked by TMZ later that month, Johnson was spotted without his wedding ring.
Amid the rumors, a separate source exclusively told Us that Jessica and Johnson were “living separately.” A third insider added that they were “trying to figure out a separation without disrupting their kids’ lives as much as possible.”
A fourth source called Jessica “heartbroken” over the marital woes. The insider added, “[It was] not an easy decision for her.”
Following the split, Us confirmed that Simpson’s house is currently for sale at an asking price of $17.9 million. The new price is over $4 million less than her original $22 million price point. After purchasing the property in 2013 from Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne for $11.5 million, Simpson put it up for sale in September 2023. Simpson took it off the market in August 2024, but relisted the home on Saturday, January 11.
The real estate listing was reactivated days after wildfires spread across the Los Angeles area, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate. Simpson seemingly shared that she and her family left their home. “We stayed as long as we could 🙏🏼,” she wrote via her Instagram Story on January 9.
