POSITION SUMMARY:

Fisk University seeks an Assistant Director
of Upward Bound. This position is focused on daily management of the Upward Bound tutoring program, monitoring participants’ academic
progress, coordinating programmatic data collection and reporting, intensive academic advising, and instruction in a range of cognitive and
non-cognitive skills development: effective test taking, study skills and learning strategies, help-seeking, and other skills. Assistant
Director must be able to assume leadership of pathway development and design, aptitude, skills, abilities, and interest in in-demand
jobs/careers, and service- and shadow-related partnerships. Persons who have a background or experience with the Upward Bound-eligible
student population are preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential job responsibilities include but are not
limited to the following:

  • Delivering direct services to students including academic, personal, career and financial counseling.
  • Prepare case notes and other written documentation to enter into students’ records.
  • Audit the files of the Fisk
    University Upward Bound Program monthly to ensure information is updated
  • Coordinate service delivery with students assigned
    faculty advisors, monitor academic progress and issue early warning student support. – Participate in on-campus programs and events for
    students, including open houses, information sessions, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with instructor/on-site coordinators other
    personnel at the Upward Bound target schools.
  • Recommend interventions to improve student academic performance.
  • Assist
    the director with day-to-day administrative support.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

  • Assists with the development of
    graduate recruitment and promotional materials
  • Works with IT personnel to develop student tracking system and other computerized
    tools, as well as training modes for personnel involved in retention activities
  • Works occasional evening and weekend hours
  • Refers students to appropriate campus and off-campus resources
  • Coordinate annual Upward Bound summer camp

  • Supervise college visits and cultural field trips and events
  • Supervise weekly sessions with students at target schools

  • Performs other duties as assigned

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Required Skills, Knowledge,
Abilities, and Competencies

  • Strong organizational, communication, customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong
    computer skills, including PC and MS Office products.
  • Strong knowledge of Upward Bound tutoring programs, monitoring
    participants’ academic progress, coordinating programmatic data collection and reporting, academic advising, and instruction in a range of
    cognitive and non-cognitive skills development
  • Available for regular evening and weekend programs and activities; Saturday
    activities and summer travel are required.
  • Polished presentation/public speaking skills and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum of three years of work experience in higher education, secondary education, or counseling providing direct services to
students. Licenses or Certificates: None.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the
employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee may
regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job
include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Environmental
Conditions:

Working conditions – Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject
the employee to any unpleasant elements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Normal office conditions. The noise level in the
work environment is usually moderate.
