Canelo Alvarez Explains Why He Won’t Give David Benavidez A Fight

Canelo Alvarez explained why he hasn’t given David Benavidez a fight, saying that he’s been disrespectful to him with how he’s approached trying to get the opportunity. Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) says why he should give money to someone who uses that tactic.

Over the last few years, Benavidez has used constant pressure to push Canelo into giving him the fight he wants. He’s accused him of ducking him, questioned his legacy, and also mentioned that he’d had success sparring with Dmitry Bivol, a fighter that Canelo lost to.

Canelo’s Dismissal

Most fighters would have given up on trying to pressure Canelo for a fight if they were ignored, but not Benavidez. He’s still talking about wanting to fight him, even though he’s now fighting at 175. He sounds fixated on Canelo, which some fans find creepy.

It shows that Benavidez has grown accustomed to fighting whomever he wants without anyone saying no. When he finally meets someone who isn’t interested, he can’t mentally process it and move on; he just keeps pushing.

“When somebody approaches you like that, and calls you out like that, you don’t need to give them any money,” said Canelo Alvarez said to the Ring Podcast about David Benavidez. “At this point, I’ve fought with all the champions and all the best out there.  I can do whatever I want now, and I don’t like the way he approached [to get] the fight.

“I think he’s wanted the fight, and he’s been respectful. ‘I want Canelo,’” said Alvarez about Terence Crawford having been respectful of him about his approach to get a fight against him.

“Yeah, people want to see the fight, and maybe they’ll see the fight. We don’t know,” said Canelo about a clash between him and Terence Crawford. “Maybe they’ll see that fight. I’m always open to good fights. He’s a really good fighter with good abilities and everything, and maybe we’ll see that fight. We don’t know yet.”
