Job Description:
The Director of Digital Learning and Innovation will lead the development and management of the university’s online, hybrid, and virtual learning programs. This role, reporting to the Provost, involves working with faculty and staff to ensure the effective and innovative pedagogical application of technology towards exemplary course delivery. The Director will oversee the adaptation of curriculum to various formats, manage delivery platforms, and ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements. The position also involves strategic planning, market analysis, and collaboration with various university departments, including the Office of Information Technology, to enhance the quality and accessibility of online education and innovation among all of MSMU’s curriculum.
Work Location: Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles) and Chalon Campus (West Los Angeles). Remote work available 1-2 days per week.

Annual Salary Rate Range: $86,500.00 – $95,000.00
Monthly Salary Rate Range: $7,208.34 – $7,916.67
Hiring salary can be above the posted pay range if candidate’s qualifications are determined to be above the minimum requirements of the position description.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership and Program Development:
- Develops and implements a comprehensive strategy for online learning that aligns with the university’s mission and goals
- Evaluates and recommends innovative concepts, technologies, and delivery modes for online, hybrid, virtual and face-to-face learning
- Oversees the design, development, and delivery of online courses and programs, ensuring they meet high academic standards and incorporate innovative teaching methods
2. Quality Assurance and Compliance:
- Establishes and maintains quality assurance processes for online learning, including course evaluations, faculty training, and student feedback mechanisms
- Ensures the exemplary quality of online courses and compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements
- Aligns efforts with the university’s academic priorities, mission, branding, and institutional learning outcomes
- Ensures that all activities are conducted within the established university policies, ADA and FERPA guidelines, and other applicable laws pertaining to employment and education.
- Ensures compliance with the University’s and WSCUC’s standards for distance learning
3. Technology Integration and Innovation:
- Identifies and implements cutting-edge technologies and platforms to enhance the online learning experience, including artificial intelligence platforms
- Fosters a culture of innovation in online education, exploring new trends and best practices to continuously improve the university’s offerings
4. Collaboration:
- Works closely with faculty, academic departments, and administrative units to support the development and delivery of online courses
- Collaborates with academic departments, faculty, and staff to ensure compliance with accessibility and ADA requirements
- Facilitates collaborations with the Office of Instructional Design and Center for Academic Innovation and Creativity (CAIC), and with the Office of Information Technology
- Builds strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders; evaluating recruitment success; enhancing the regional, national and international reputation of the University through marketing and recruitment efforts
- Collaborates with Provost Office and Compliance Manager as it relates to state authorization for online and field instruction
5. Professional Development and Student Training:
- Provides leadership and support for faculty development in online teaching and learning.
- Facilitates and recommend professional development for faculty.
- Facilitates training for students to gain online, hybrid, and virtual skills and expertise.
- Trains faculty and staff on fair use and copyright laws as they relate to distance learning.
6. Budget Management:
- Develop and manage the budget for the Online Learning Office, ensuring efficient use of resources.
7. General:
- Conducts university business in a professional and ethical manner that includes the University’s core values of integrity, diversity, empowerment, service, learning, and collaboration.
- Communicates effectively in a professional, tactful, and courteous manner with students, employees, faculty, and the general public.
- Additional assigned duties related to the position, as needed.
Requirements:
Knowledge:
Strong understanding of online learning technologies and platforms.
- Advanced proficiency with Learning Management Systems and how to implement LMSs policy and change on a campus (currently use Canvas and DesignPlus tools).
- Experience in developing standardized LMS shells and shepherding them through institutional processes.
- Experience with virtual/augmented reality and world-building;
Abilities and Skills:
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Excellent project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to create and implement processes for evaluating online course structure, dispute resolution, and addressing technological issues.
- Knowledge of accreditation standards and regulatory requirements for online education.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lead and inspire a team.
- A growth mindset for online program development.
Education:
- Minimum of a Master’s degree in Learning Design and Technology, Curriculum and Educational Technology, or a related field. Doctorate preferred.
Experience:
- Demonstrated expertise and teaching experience in the application of technology to online, hybrid, and various virtual course delivery. Leadership experience in managing delivery platforms, strategic planning, and online marketing of educational programs (3 years experience preferred).
- Experience leading design of online, blended, and hybrid learning initiatives at scale in higher education, or alternative credentials.
