Train for your Old Person Body

Last December, I sheepishly admitted there was a huge hole in my Nerd cred.

I grew up drawing cartoons, took AP art in high school, and was always fascinated by hand-drawn animation…

But I had never seen a single second of any Studio Ghibli cartoon!

emailemail

Studio Ghibli is the Japanese equivalent of Disney, with Hayao Miyazaki as the Japanese Walt: the studio has won multiple Academy Awards for their beautifully hand-drawn animated films, and Miyazaki has reached legendary status for making these films over the past 40+ years.

Luckily, the amazing community over on Threads gave me hundreds of comments of support and helped me decide which movie I should start with!

Since making that announcement, I’ve watched all 20+ Studio Ghibli films, fell in love with Japan, and became endlessly fascinated with Hayao Miyazaki.

(My favorites are Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Whisper of the Heart, and The Wind Rises.).

After watching every film, I moved on to watching documentaries about Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli because I needed to know more.

Thanks to these documentaries, I got a fascinating look at Miyazaki’s creative style and experiences in making these films alongside his coworkers.

The running joke has been that Miyazaki is the “Never-ending man” and can’t seem to retire.

There was something that stood out to me in each documentary:

In The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, at one point all employees at Studio Ghibli stood up and moved through a series of mobility drills and calisthenics, including Miyazaki.

Later in the doc, I observed Miyazaki demonstrating a very deep squat with perfect form and no assistance. How many people do you know in their mid-late 70s who can perform an unassisted deep squat!?

In Never-ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki, Miyazaki is filmed multiple times chopping wood with an ax in the backyard of his studio.

And in Hayao Miyazaki and The Heron, Miya-san (his nickname), now in his 80s, is still out chopping wood, going for walks in the woods, climbing over fallen trees, doing his office exercises, and hard at work on the film that would culminate his life’s work.

(Yes, I know. Miyazaki also has a cigarette in his mouth for nearly every minute of every documentary! He’s lucky that he hasn’t developed lung cancer yet, and I’m reminded he’s not the perfect picture of health!).

I bring this up because I think it shows a different side of exercise than we might normally consider.

Train for your Old Person Body

Watching this doc of Hayao Miyazaki staying active and keeping his brain sharp into his 80s…

I was reminded of this amazing post from Elizabeth (@ThisGirlLifts on Instagram):

emailemail

As we get older, it’s easier for us to move less, which gives us less energy, and makes it more difficult to find the momentum and mobility to keep moving. This might keep us from spending time with our family or our friends because we’re unable to muster up the energy.

Teddy Roosevelt once said “let us rather run the risk of wearing out than rusting out.”

In other words: use it or lose it, bub.

It’s not a stretch for me to imagine Miyazaki’s ability to be a “never-ending man” is not only due to good genetics (and luck), but also because he has actively chosen to wear out rather than rust out.

Reflecting on why he chose to push himself to complete yet another animated film into his 8th decade on this planet, he simply replied that this was all he knew how to do: “I’d rather die doing this than die doing nothing.”

Fitness is more than weight loss

At Nerd Fitness, we encourage all Rebels to think about their “Big Why:”

Why bother exercising and building new habits and pushing yourself to level up your life when the couch beckons?

What’s the point of exerting yourself and learning to deal with discomfort when retreating to comfort is easier and so damn alluring?

A really strong “Big Why” can help us stay on target especially when life turns into a dumpster fire or we want to give up.

For Miyazaki, he’s decided that “getting out what’s inside me” is a worthy use of his time. He’s found peace and fulfillment through creating things rather than consuming them, which means he needs to take care of his body enough to stay alive long enough to get these things done!

For my gramma (who I visited in the hospital last month), her purpose is to support her community and help those around her. Staying active allowed her to do this well into her 90s!

If you’re struggling to come up with a reason for why to do something…

You can do worse than “Training for my old person body.” This is the only body you get, and the only life you get, so today is as good a day as any to start treating your body with a bit more respect.

It doesn’t need to be dramatic either. We can start simple:

  • We can go for a short daily walk.
  • We can stand up throughout the day and do mobility work like squats and arm swings.
  • We can start strength training to build strong bones and stave off needing assistance for as long as possible.

It’s on us to keep our bodies active, and wearing out is better than rusting out through lack of use.

As a chaotic creator who spends a lot of time in my own head, Hayao Miyazaki has given me plenty to think about:

I hope when I’m in my 80s, I am still writing this newsletter and helping people, chopping wood and going for walks and spending time with loved ones.

I know I can’t control what happens and accidents happen and so much of life is outside of my control, but I’m going to do my best to give myself the best chance to keep creating and wear out rather than rust out!

I’ll leave you with the final curmudgeonly quote from Miyazaki that closes out the documentary Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron:

“Stop whining and get moving.”

Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time for me to train for my old man body!

-Steve

PS: The original Japanese title for The Boy and the Heron is How Do You Live?. This is a far more interesting (and apt) title for the film; it’s truly the encapsulation of his life’s work, those that have influenced him, and his deepest thoughts on the meaning of life.

Israel seizing on Syria chaos to strike military assets

Israeli troops have taken up positions on Mt Hermon, also known as Jabal al-Sheikh

After launching hundreds of air strikes on Syrian military assets and seizing positions including the summit of a mountain with an uninterrupted sightline to the capital Damascus, Israel appears to be taking advantage of what it sees as a unique moment of opportunity.

Syrian command structures were in disarray, with key positions apparently left unmanned after the fall of the Assad regime.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says its air force and navy have conducted more than 350 strikes since Saturday night, taking out an estimated 70-80% of Syrian strategic military assets from Damascus to Latakia.

They included fighter aircraft, radar and air defence sites, and naval ships, as well as weapons stockpiles, the IDF said.

“The navy operated last night to destroy the Syrian fleet with great success,” said Defence Minister Israel Katz.

The IDF has also moved ground forces east from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights into a demilitarised buffer zone in Syria and, it now admits, just beyond.

Katz said he had told the military to “establish a sterile defence zone free of weapons and terrorist threats in southern Syria, without a permanent Israeli presence”.

One Israeli commentator said the past 72 hours had “stood out even for people who thought they had already seen everything”.

“It didn’t strip the Syrian military of specific capabilities only – it sent it back to the starting line, bereft of any significant strategic capabilities,” wrote Yoav Limor in the Israel Hayom newspaper.

“The IDF operation to destroy Syria’s military capabilities is the largest it has ever undertaken,” commented Udi Etzion on the Walla news site.

The IDF said it had carried out more than 350 air strikes on Syria in the space of two days

Former Israeli Air Force officers commented in online posts that some of the attacks carried out as part of this operation were based on plans drawn years ago.

One military analyst said that some targets were already identified by Israel in the mid-1970s.

Meanwhile, troops have taken control of positions in the Golan, including the top of Mt Hermon, according to Israeli media. In Arabic, the mountain is known as Jabal al-Sheikh.

“The territory guarantees strategic control over the whole southern Syrian arena, which generates an immediate threat to Israel,” the Ynet news website quoted Kobi Michael, a researcher at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), as saying. “There is no higher vantage point than the Syrian part of the Golan.”

Officials stress that Israel has been acting in its own national security interests following the collapse of the Assad regime.

They say the aim is to stop weapons that the regime held falling into the wrong hands – whether Syrian extremist factions or its old foe, the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. Hezbollah and its backer, Iran, were close allies of Assad, helping him to prop him up in office during the long civil war in Syria.

“We will not allow an extreme Islamic terrorist entity to act against Israel beyond its border, putting its citizens at risk,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video message on Tuesday.

grey placeholderMap of Israeli strikes on Syria

Syria and Israel fought against each other in the Middle East Wars of 1948, 1967 and 1973 and formally regard each other as enemy states.

Under Bashar al-Assad, Syria was a significant regional military power. Israel had attacked it in recent years in hundreds of strikes that were rarely openly acknowledged. Israel’s calculation included a sphere of deniability for itself but also for Assad so he would not feel forced to respond.

These had focused on preventing transfer of weapons to Hezbollah, as the main transport route was overland from Syria to Lebanon, arms manufacturing, and Syrian air defence systems, which posed a threat to Israeli warplanes sent on missions.

Israel avoided major attacks that could have led to wider war and sought to avoid conflict with Russia, after it became Assad’s biggest supporter in recent years.

Some defence analysts suggest that Israel wanted to avoid weakening the Syrian regime for fear of triggering the chaos that could follow if its opponents seized power. Over the years, Israel and Syria – under its secular, Baathist regime – stuck to well-defined red lines; it was a known adversary.

But the speedy advance of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) prompted a hastily developed new Israeli strategy.

UN peacekeepers remain in the buffer zone established in Syrian territory following the 1973 Middle East War and have stressed that by moving its ground forces in, Israel is now in violation of the ceasefire agreement which set it up.

Israeli officials argue that the ceasefire agreement has now collapsed, as the other party to the agreement ceased to exist, and that its moves are temporary and limited for self-defence.

A UN peacekeeping spokesperson said peacekeepers were “unable to move freely within the buffer zone following recent events”, adding that it was “imperative that the UN peacekeepers are allowed carry out their mandated tasks without hindrance”.

“We’re against these types of attacks. I think this is a turning point for Syria. It should not be used by its neighbours to encroach on the territory of Syria,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq and the Arab League have all issued official statements, with several presenting it as a land grab made by taking advantage of recent events, and a violation of Syria’s sovereignty and international law.

Israeli forces have been operating inside the demilitarised buffer zone in Syria and just beyond

France and Germany have also criticised Israeli actions, with France demanding Israel withdraw troops from the buffer area and Germany warning Israel along with Turkey to Syria’s north not to jeopardise the chances of a peaceful transition in Syria.

“We must not allow the internal Syrian dialogue process to be torpedoed from the outside,” said Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

The US has urged Israel to ensure its incursion is “temporary”.

Among Israelis however there has been broad public support for the country’s pre-emptive actions.

Several media outlets are stressing the potential danger posed by Syria’s new Islamist leaders, with HTS still widely designated as a terrorist organisation.

In the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Amihai Attali congratulated Israel’s military and political establishments, saying they had learnt a valuable lesson from the deadly Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023, which caught the country off guard.

“One of the most important lessons of the invasion, massacre and mass-kidnappings is that we cannot afford the privilege of trying to interpret enemy intentions,” he wrote.

“We can’t afford to make mistakes on that front. We don’t have the margin of error for that.”

This Week in AI: Seeking balance in the deluge of news

0

Hiya, folks, welcome to TechCrunch’s regular AI newsletter. If you want this in your inbox every Wednesday, sign up here.

Longtime readers of the newsletter might’ve noticed that we skipped a week last week. That wasn’t our intent, and we do apologize.

The reason was we’ve reached an inflection point in the AI news cycle. We’re a small team, and we’re stretched thin. It’s becoming next to impossible to cover every announcement, controversy, academic paper, trend, open model release, lawsuit, and so on.

Take this month, for example. OpenAI is in the midst of what’s effectively a 12-day press engagement. Google is gearing up to launch major new AI products, as is Elon Musk’s company, xAI. And that’s only the news from the biggest AI players.

To better deal with the deluge, we’re making a small change to This Week in AI. Going forward, the newsletter’s word count will be a little shorter. It won’t be a drastic reduction — you might not even notice it — but the idea is to make This Week in AI more concise while ensuring it reaches your inbox on a regular cadence.

We hope you find the improved newsletter more digestible. As always, we’re open to feedback — drop me a line with thoughts anytime.

Research paper of the week

A team of computer scientists from Ai2 and UC San Diego say they’ve created an AI model that can predict 100 years of climate patterns in 25 hours.

The model, called Spherical Dyffusion, starts off with knowledge of basic climate science and then applies a series of transformations to predict future patterns. Unlike many state-of-the-art climate prediction models, Spherical Dyffusion can run on relatively modest hardware, the team claims.

The model has limitations. But the researchers plan to continue refining it. The next version will simulate how the atmosphere responds to carbon dioxide, they say.

Separately, Ai2 released the second generation of its climate-modeling AI, Climate Emulator.

Sora might be getting all the attention, but a new video-generating model out of MIT CSAIL and Adobe Research is potentially more exciting.

The model, called CausVid, can start playing videos the moment it begins to generate them — providing a sort of preview of the finished clip. That’s in contrast to models like Sora, which can’t show clips in progress.

The researchers plan to release an open source implementation soon.

The group of artists who leaked access to Sora last November has published a series of essays explaining why they did it.

The essays are well worth the read, but the gist is, the group wanted to denounce what they saw as the exploitation of creatives for R&D and public relations.

“We called on artists to think beyond proprietary systems,” the group wrote in a post, “and the limitations of prompting a model mediated by big tech.”
