Russian government spies targeted Ukraine using tools developed by cybercriminals
A Russian-government backed hacking group targeted Ukraine’s military using tools and infrastructure developed by cybercriminals, according to new research.
On Wednesday, Microsoft published a report detailing a hacking campaign carried out by a group it calls Secret Blizzard, which the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) previously said “is almost certainly subordinate to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Centre 18,” and which other security companies refer to as Turla.
Microsoft researchers wrote in the report, shared with TechCrunch ahead of publication, that Secret Blizzard used a botnet known as Amadey, which is allegedly sold on Russian hacking forums and developed by a cybercriminal group, to attempt to break into “devices associated with the Ukrainian military” between March and April of this year. While admitting that it’s still investigating how Secret Blizzard gained access to Amadey, the company thinks the hacking group either used the botnet by paying for it as malware as a service, or hacked into it.
“Secret Blizzard has been using footholds from third parties — either by surreptitiously stealing or purchasing access — as a specific and deliberate method to establish footholds of espionage value,” according to the report, referring to the Amadey botnet as one of those third parties.
One of the hackers’ goals was to evade detection. Sherrod DeGrippo, Microsoft’s director of threat intelligence strategy, told TechCrunch that “using commodity tools allows the threat actor to potentially hide their origin and make attribution more difficult.”

The Amadey botnet is normally used by cybercriminals to install a cryptominer, according to the report. Microsoft is confident that the hackers behind Amadey and those behind Secret Blizzard are different, DeGrippo said.
In this campaign, Secret Blizzard targeted computers related to the Ukrainian Army and Ukrainian Border Guard, DeGrippo told TechCrunch. Microsoft said these recent cyberattacks are “at least the second time since 2022 that Secret Blizzard has used a cybercrime campaign to facilitate a foothold for its own malware in Ukraine.”
Secret Blizzard is known to target “ministries of foreign affairs, embassies, government offices, defense departments, and defense-related companies worldwide” with a focus on long-term espionage and intelligence collection, according to Microsoft’s report.
In this case, the Secret Blizzard malware sample that Microsoft analyzed was designed to gather information about a victim’s system — such as device name and what, if any, antivirus software is installed — as a first step to then deploy other malware and tools.
According to Microsoft’s researchers, Secret Blizzard deployed this malware on devices to determine whether the targets were “of further interest.” For example, Secret Blizzard targeted devices using Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite service, which has been used by the Ukrainian military in their operations fighting invading Russian forces.
DeGrippo said that the company is confident that this hacking campaign was conducted by Secret Blizzard in part because the hackers used custom backdoors called Tavdig and KazuarV2, “never seen used by other groups.”
Last week, Microsoft and security firm Black Lotus Lab published reports that showed how Secret Blizzard has co-opted the tools and infrastructure of another nation-state hacking group for its espionage activities since 2022. In that case, according to the two companies’ research, Secret Blizzard piggybacked on a Pakistan-based hacking group to military and intelligence targets in Afghanistan and India. At the time, Microsoft noted that Secret Blizzard has used this technique of taking advantage of other hackers’ tools and infrastructure since 2017, in cases involving Iranian government hackers and a Kazakhstan hacking group, among others.

Lisa Kudrow Says Friends Cast Only Met for Dinner Once After Show Ended
The Friends cast was known to be a tight-knit group on and off screen, but Lisa Kudrow’s latest revelation has shocked Us!
The Phoebe Buffay actress, 61, said that she and her famous pals — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and the late Matthew Perry — only met up for dinner once after the show ended but before their 2021 televised reunion.
“We only had dinner, the six of us, once before, since the show had ended,” Kudrow shared on the Tuesday, December 10, episode of Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast (via Sky News).
According to Kudrow, the dinner took place around a decade after the hit NBC sitcom ended in 2004, and the stars “didn’t miss a beat.”
“It was so great that it was like, ‘We should do this more,’” she added.
Alas, the next time the famous friends all got together was in 2021 to record HBO Max’s Friends: The Reunion, in which they revisited their famous characters and story lines.
Little did the cast — or fans — know that would be the last time we’d see all six stars together. Perry died at age 54 from the acute effects of ketamine in October 2023.
“It shook us up, I have to say,” Kudrow told Ferguson on Tuesday’s podcast. “He said it won’t be a surprise, but it will be a shock, and that was exactly right. So smart, that is true — it wasn’t a surprise, but it was a shock.”
“It was a big jolt,” she added.
Speaking to Dax Shepard on his “Armchair Expert” podcast on Monday, December 9, Kudrow said she takes some comfort in the fact that Perry was happy at the time of his death.
“This will sound odd. I’m more comforted that he was happy the day he died,” she said. “He got to die happy. And to me, that was a gift.”
Kudrow also shared that the bond between the six Friends stars didn’t just happen overnight.
“It was great, we really did get along,” she said. “We also worked really hard at being friends. That six-way relationship took some work and we did it.”
“If someone said something or did something, it didn’t get too big, because it was, ‘Can I talk to you?’ — usually not me, because I had to learn to be, ‘Can I talk to you about something?’ because I never knew that was allowed!” Kudrow explained. “But I saw it modeled really well by Courteney and Jennifer and Matt. Respectful communication.”

The “Yes And” Rule | Nerd Fitness
A few years back, I attended my friend Nick’s blowout 40th birthday party.
As part of the celebration, he hired an improv comic, and we all had to participate in learning improv comedy.
(I just felt the collective shiver of all the introverts reading this newsletter).
We started tossing out fun scenarios and scenes to participate in, and we learned about the most important rule of Improv: “Yes and.”
Two simple words, and the foundation for all of improv comedy:
Whenever somebody comes up with a scene, sentence, or situation, the ONLY acceptable response is: “yes and”
- Yes: Acceptance! I accept and acknowledge that whatever the situation is, no matter how absurd, to be true.
- And: build! Like a tennis match, after your improv partner hits the ball to you, your job is to hit it back! Building on the situation or scene.
For example, if your improv partner says, “I’m a space pirate” your response could be:
- “Yes, and I’m the space police, you’re under arrest!”
- “Yes, and I’m a first mate looking for a new crew, this is perfect!”
- “Yes, and my name is Captain Hook, welcome to Pirates Anonymous.”
The “yes and” rule is so crucial, because there’s nothing worse than a bad improv partner!
Kind of like Liam Neeson in this short sketch with Ricky Gervais, (I laugh every time):
The Yes And Rule for Life
As a former overachieving “gifted child” who has quite the negative inner critic, I’ve worked hard on incorporating “yes and” into my life.
The “yes” part is built around acceptance, which is something I’ve spent the past two years working to embrace.
Check out my past essays on Acceptance and Wabi Sabi for more.
It’s the “and” part I’ve focused on lately.
As Dr. Kristen Neff points out on in her book Self-compassion, life is complex and so are humans:
“Judgment defines people as bad versus good and tries to capture their essential nature with simplistic labels.
Discriminating wisdom recognizes complexity and ambiguity.”
Nothing is ever as simple as it seems. Things are never as good or bad as our brains think they are either.
So despite the voice in our heads that wants to judge everything in black-or-white, yes-or-no, good-or-bad terms… We must remember that life is a beautifully complicated mess.
Author F. Scott Fitzgerald once said:
The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.
One should, for example, be able to see that things are hopeless and yet be determined to make them otherwise.
This is my task for you today.
Is there a part of your life that feels black-or-white, and instead could use a bit of complexity?
Nothing is as simple as it seems.
Life is hard, and change is hard. AND you’re a good person who’s trying.
Which means there’s hope. And hope is the warrior emotion.
Also, please go watch that Liam Neeson skit.
You’re welcome.
-Steve
