Most mornings, I’d walk the shore and collect seashells. Not the perfect ones the colorful ones, the ones with cracks and stories. The ones shaped by the tide. There was something grounding in that small ritual: searching, noticing, choosing beauty in imperfection. It reminded me that what’s real is what stays with us.

One afternoon, I watched a small sailboat out in the distance steady, quiet, moving with the wind. It got me thinking: what’s the next wave? What’s the smooth idea I’ve been too busy to notice? There’s always something on the horizon. But we can only see it when we step back far enough to look.

The ocean had something to teach me its rhythm, its ease, its unapologetic spaciousness. When you’re standing in front of that kind of horizon, your mind quiets. You stop solving problems and start reconnecting with purpose. And in that stillness, something vital returns: clarity.

We don’t talk about this enough in leadership development. We talk about strategy, performance, outcomes. But we forget: leaders are human first. And humans need rest. We need space to breathe, reflect, and remember who we are underneath the job title.

When I came back to work, the first thing I wanted to do was hug my team. I missed them. I asked, “What do you need from me?”

And more importantly: “Are you doing OK, with all the noise and uncertainty out there?”

That’s the kind of leader I want to be not just one who drives the vision and mission, but one who makes space for people to feel seen and heard and supported, especially with the confusing information available.

Because strong workplace culture isn’t just about running harder. It’s about returning whole so you can lead with empathy, intention, and presence.

So here’s a leadership challenge:

When’s the last time you gave yourself real space—enough for your shoulders to drop, your notebook to open, and your heart to remember why you do this work?
